Your Sciatic Nerve

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in your body. It stretches through a lot of the body, starting in the lower back and going down through the hips and buttocks and into both of your legs. When this nerve is adversely affected, it can cause various levels of pain, from mild soreness to excruciating pain. When a patient develops sciatica, they generally have it on just one side of their body.

The sciatic nerve can be affected because the patient has a herniated disk or may have a bone spur somewhere on it. Spinal stenosis is another cause. This happens when the spine narrows and puts pressure on this nerve. Tumors can also pressure the nerve. Diabetes is also a factor in some cases. When the nerve gets compressed, patients can be in a lot of pain and have a hard time doing their daily tasks.

Sciatica Causes

Spine pressure is the cause of this condition, but it can happen in several ways. If a patient is pregnant or obese, this can put pressure on the nerve. The body going through changes can also result in sciatica. Some jobs can cause it by requiring you to move a certain way or to stay still for a long time. If you routinely carry heavy items at work, this can be another cause. Being diabetic results in nerve damage, which can affect the sciatic nerve.

Symptoms of Sciatica

The main symptom of sciatica is pain in an area that is a part of the sciatic nerve. It can cause lower back pain and necessitate back pain treatment. It can also cause pain in one of your hips or your buttocks. It can even be as far down as the back of a leg. It generally affects just one side, and it can cause numbness and tingling as well as pain.
